1978 Seagreaves Redware Loaf Dish Sgraffito Folk-Art Spread-Eagle Decoration

Description: A nice glazed and nicely decorated redware deep loaf dish made by James C Seagreaves. This mostly yellow colored dish has sgraffito decoration showing a spread wing eagle in the center. The eagle has a shield on its chest and splits the date 1978 with its talons and tail. The dish has green blotches throughout as part of the background. The back of the plate is glazed and has a brown color. The bottom of the dish is flat with rounded sides as well as rounded corners rising to a plain rim. The piece has a raised flowers or rosettes on the exterior at each of the short ends. A nice contemporary patriotic folk art loaf dish by one of Pennsylvania best known folk artists. Date: The piece is dated 1978.

Origin: Purchased at an estate auction in southeastern Pennsylvania.

Size: The piece measures ~10" by ~6" on top and is ~1 5/8" high. The piece weighs about one and a half pounds.

Maker: James Christian Seagreaves.

Marks: Marked "JCS" on bottom in cursive calligraphy.

Distinguishing Characteristics - Most Interesting About The Piece: A beautiful piece of contemporary redware made by a master potter. A beautiful piece, which deserves a prominent spot in your redware collection.

Condition: The dish is in good condition with no cracks, repairs, chips, or hairlines. Examination of the piece reveals general fine crazing to the glaze which gives the piece a very nice character. The dish has a few of the usual defects you would expect with all these primitive redware pieces such as pops, slubs, unglazed areas and uneven spots, mostly on the back. However, these are very small and do not distract from the beauty or quality of the piece. A great looking piece of folk art pottery in excellent condition to add to your collection.
