1985 Redware Large Pie Plate Glazed Brown Coloring with Mottling Brown Slip Cow Decoration By Ned Foltz

Description: A beautiful redware large pie plate with a coggled rim. This glazed dish has light brown or brownish-yellow colored background with brown colored mottling along the coggled edge or rim. There is a brown colored cow standing in the center of the plate. The plate has thick walls and is rather heavy. It has a slightly flat base with rounded sides that rise to a coggled edge. The base as well as the exterior wall are not glazed and show the typical color of unglazed redware. The bowl is signed and dated by the artist. Date: 1985.

Origin: Reinholds, Lancaster County, Pennsylvania.

Size and Weight: Measures ~9 1/2" in diameter and is ~1 3/4"heigh. The piece weighs over 2 pounds and 5 ounces.

Maker: C. Ned Foltz.

Marks: Marked "c. n. Foltz; The Foltz Pottery Mark; Pa 1985" with a cross to the bottom of the writing all in cursive calligraphy on the bottom of the base.

Distinguishing Characteristics - Most Interesting About The Piece: This is a beautiful redware plate made in the best Pennsylvania Dutch tradition of Southeastern Pennsylvania. It is rather substantial and weighs over 2 pounds. A definite beauty deserving of a prominent spot in any redware collection.

Condition: Plate is in excellent condition. It has no chips, cracks, repairs, or hairlines. The plate has general crazing to the glaze. The plate also has some minor scuff marks on the cow's body, which can be seen in the photos. Be that as it may, this is a beautiful and substantial piece by a great master potter, which would look great in your collection. Please see photos for additional condition information.
