1990 Glazed Redware Penny Bank Brown Colored Bird's Head by Lester Breininger

  • $ 174.99

Description: This is a 1990 very unusual redware penny bank glazed with a dark brown coloring with some yellow and black coloring. The piece is in the shape of a bird's head, rather uncommon. The bird's head shows a tuft on top, a beak, and highlighted eyes with black brows. The piece has a round flat base with what looks like yellow and black feathers? along the edge of the base. The piece shows carved eyes, feathers on the tuft on the head, beak, and nostrils. The bank has a coin slot on top of the bird's head a bit to the back. This beautiful glazed redware bank was made by Lester Breininger as evidenced by the mark LB. Please see photo to appreciate the beautiful design and colors. The bottom of the bank is marked as to the maker and the date the piece was made. Please carefully review the photos presented as they are part and parcel of our description.

Date: 1990.

Origin: Robesonia, Berks County - Pennsylvania.

Size: The bank is ~3 1/4" high, is ~4" at its longest, ~2 1/2" at its widest with the base being ~2 1/4" in diameter. The piece weighs ~7.2 ounces.

Maker: Lester Breininger.

Marks: Marked "LB 90 PA" in print calligraphy on the bottom.

Distinguishing Characteristics - Most Interesting About The Piece: This is a very nice Breininger piece with unusual shape, look, and colors made by the Master potter himself. Needless to say Mr. Breininger has passed away in December 2011 and his pottery has become highly desirable.

Condition: The bank is in very good condition with no cracks, no repairs, no chips, or hairlines. The piece has signs of glaze crazing throughout. The piece also has some of the normal defects you would expect in a piece of primitive pottery of this type such as spots where the glaze did not fully flow, pops, slubs, and surface roughness. This particular piece has a minimum of these issues. Finally the bank came to us with a coin in it and we are selling as found with the coin still in it and you can hear it. Be that as it may, the piece is solid and intact and would make a great addition to your collection. Please see photos for additional condition information.
