1991 Foltz Glazed and Sponge Decorated Redware Santa Clause or Belsnickel Wearing Hooded Coat and Carrying Bag

Description: A nice size and great looking figurine in the shape of Santa Clause, father Christmas, or a bearded Belsnickel. He is wearing a long coat with a hood. He is also carrying a sack on his back and a bag with a strap around his shoulder. The Santa has a beard with sponged yellow coloring. The same sponged yellow coloring is along the vertical edge and the bottom edge of the coat. The figurine has an orangish-brown colored glaze decorated with yellow sponged highlights for Santa's beard and along the edges of the coat. The hollow cast figurine has nice and well defined details. Look at the eyes, nose and beard. A very nicely done piece. Origin: Reinholds, Lancaster County, Pennsylvania.

Size: 8 13/8" in height and the base is ~2 7/8" by ~2 1/4". The piece weighs about 11 ounces.

Maker: C. Ned Foltz.

Marks: Marked "Foltz Pottery; Pa 1991" with a cross next to it on the inside near the base.

Distinguishing Characteristics - Most Interesting About The Piece: This is a very well made piece by Ned Foltz with absolutely great details and a very nice shiny glaze. Mr. Foltz is a highly collectible master potter and the piece is made in the best tradition of Pennsylvania Dutch pottery. Definitely a nice piece deserving a prominent spot in any redware collection.

Condition: In excellent condition with no cracks, hairlines, chips, or repairs. The piece has general crazing to the glaze, which really is hard to see and does not distract from the quality or beauty of the piece.
