1992 Redware Glazed Slip Decorated Rectangular Plate Dark Tobacco Spit on Brown By Lester Breininger

Description: A nice glazed and slip decorated redware rectangular plate with canted corners. The plate has a flat base with flared straight sides rising to a coggled edge. The plate is decorated with yellow slip dots randomly distributed throughout with some dark tobacco spit decoration and a few dark spots. Beautiful and very unusual but still reminiscent of Pennsylvania Dutch fold art. The plate itself is brown in color with the more modern design elements of random yellow dots and dark splotches. The plate was made in the studios of Lester Breininger on July 21, 1992. This type of decoration is very much in the Pennsylvania Dutch style common in southeastern Pennsylvania specifically in Bucks, Montgomery, Chester, and Lancaster counties. The plate is glazed on the inside but not on the back. The unglazed back has the characteristic color of unglazed redware and is signed by the artist. Origin: Robesonia, Pennsylvania.

Size: Measures ~8 1/2" by ~7 3/4" on top with the base being ~6" by ~5" and it is ~1 3/8" high. The piece weighs almost one pound and 4 ounces.

Marks: Marked "L Breininger Pottery; Robesonia Pa; July 21, 1992; Cicadas singing" on bottom in cursive calligraphy.

Distinguishing Characteristics - Most Interesting About The Piece: A beautiful unusual plate made and signed by the master potter himself in what appears to be his own hand writing. A beautiful redware piece, which deserves a prominent spot in your redware collection.

Condition: Plate is in excellent condition. It has no cracks, chips, repairs, or hairlines. The plate show signs of crazing to the glaze throughout. The plate has a few of the usual defects you would expect with all these primitive redware pieces such as pops, slubs, unglazed areas and uneven spots. However, this plate has a minimum number of these, which are hardly noticeable and do not interfere with its beauty or quality.
