2011 Redware 9" Plate Glazed With Sgraffito Tulips and Heart Breininger Pottery

  • $ 179.99

Description: A very nice 9" fairly flat glazed and sgraffito decorated plate. The plate which has a slightly flat base has rounded sides which flare out to a slightly coggled rim. The plate is decorated with a beautiful and very colorful sgraffito design showing several tulip flowers rising and surrounding a stylized design of what we believe is a heart with some sort of tree rising from its center, possibly a pine tree? The plate has four tulips curving up then sideways with one curving down and two having semicircular shapes on top. Just a great looking and unusual design on a yellow background with green splotches as highlights all along the edge of the plate and throughout the design. There are semi circles at 12,, 3 and 9 O'clock along the edge, which we are not certain what they represent. This plate is rather lighter than you would expect from a Breininger 9" plate and is more delicate than usual. The plate was made at the Breininger pottery in Robesonia, PA. This plate has what we would characterize as very much a Pennsylvania Dutch design from days gone by with typical subject and colors. The base of the plate is unglazed and shows the usual coloring of unglazed redware. It is marked as the date and maker. Please carefully review the photos presented as they are part and parcel of our description.

Distinguishing Characteristics - Most Interesting About The Piece: This is a beautiful plate having a great classic design with great coloring made in the studios of a master potter with the Pennsylvania Dutch heritage who died in 2011. The plate would make a nice addition to your collection of contemporary redware or art pottery.

Condition: The plate is in excellent condition with no chips, cracks, hairlines, or repairs. Upon examining the surface of the plate with a 10X magnifier we believe we see one or two lines within the glaze that may suggest onset of glaze crazing. Be that as it may, these are very difficult to see and the plate is beautiful and in great condition and would make a great addition to your collection. Please see photos to appreciate beauty and condition of this great plate.
