Antique Manganese & Lead Glazed Redware Apple Butter Crock or Storage Jar SE PA
Description: A very nice piece of American folk art, a nice size antique redware Apple Butter crock or storage jar. The jar is glazed on both the inside and out side with a manganese-lead glaze resulting in a dark brown color with a mottled appearance. The jar has a round flat base rising up with rounded sides tapering into a rolled rim. The jar also has a shaped foot. A nice piece of antique redware worthy of a spot in your collection. Date: Uncertain, but we believe the piece is from the mid 1800s to mid 1900s (mid 19th century to mid 20th century).
Origin: Southeastern Pennsylvania.
Size: The jar measures ~4" in diameter at the top, ~3" in diameter at the base, and is ~4 1/4" in height. It weighs about 14 ounces.

Marks: Unmarked.
Distinguishing Characteristics - Most Interesting About The Piece: Beautiful rich dark brown color glaze inside and out with distinguishing dark mottling indicative of manganese glaze. A beautiful, nice size, apple butter storage jar in very good condition, which seldom comes by. Definitely deserves a prominent spot in your redware collection.
Condition: The jar is in very good condition with no cracks, repairs, or hairlines. It does have scratches and several small spots where the glaze is lost. It also has glaze loss all along the edge of the top rim. The piece also has two chips at the base which we show in the photos Moreover, the piece has several spots of glaze loss on the exterior, which can also be seen in the photos. Finally as is the case with all these primitive old redware pieces, the jar has a few of the usual defects you would expect such as pops, unglazed areas, areas where the glaze did not fully flow, and uneven spots. Be that as it may, thiis is a truly beautiful piece worthy of a spot in your collection. Please see photos for additional condition information.
