Antique Redware Bean Pot Yellow and Brown Colored Matte Glaze Lug handles Missing Lid

  • $ 77.77

Description: A late 19th century yellow and brown colored glazed redware bean pot possibly made in Chester County Pennsylvania. This glazed primitive pot has a flat round base with slightly rounded sides rising to a shoulder with a neck on top of it. The pot has a shaped rim with a ledge to support a lid. Unfortunately the lid is missing. The pot has two lug handles on the sides. It has a textured surface typical of Chester County redware pottery made by the Schofield pottery. The piece is glazed inside and out with the bottom being unglazed with a dark coloring surrounded by a circle at the edge having the usual reddish color of unglazed redware. Please view photos carefully as they are part and parcel of our description.

Date: Uncertain, but sometime in the period of late 1800s to early 1900s.

Origin: Purchased at an estate sale in Chester County, Southeastern Pennsylvania, where it was most likely made.

Size: The piece ~4 1/4" in diameter at the base, ~3 3/4" diameter at the top, ~5" at its widest, and is ~4 5/8" high. The piece weighs a bit over one pound and 9 ounces.

Maker: Uncertain, but possibly Schofield Pottery.

Marks: Unmarked.

Condition: The pot is in very good condition given its age. It has no crack, breaks, or repairs. The piece has flaks to the exterior coloring or finish all over, which can be seen in the photos. This is most pronounced along the edge of the rim. The piece also has a couple of rather small chips to the top edge of the rim, which can also be seen in the photos. It also has a few small and inconsequential chips and flakes along the edge of the base. Finally, we believe the piece is missing its lid, but still looks great without it. Other than that the piece has several of the manufacturing defects you would expect in a primitive piece of redware of this vintage such as pops, slubs, areas where the glaze did not fully flow, unglazed spots, and uneven spots. All of these issues can be seen in the photos and as can be seen do not distract from the beauty of the piece. Please see photos for additional condition information.
