Rare Antique Manganese Glazed Redware Figure of a Woman Wearing Bonnet and Scarf while Holding Broom
Description: A rare antique miniature molded and glazed redware figure of a woman. The woman is holding a broom in one hand while resting her other hand on her side. She is wearing a bonnet, a scarf and an apron. This redware figure is decorated with manganese slip highlights throughout. It is also decorated with copper slip at the base. Finally, the piece is covered with a lead glaze to give it a very fine and shiny look. This was probably a child's toy and it is a wonder that it is still in one piece. We have been collecting redware for a long time and we have never seen something like that. The piece has beautiful details such as the straw on the broom, the ruffles in the dress, the decoration on the scarf, the details of her fingers, the details in her face, and the general details of her clothing. The piece, which is in great shape, has a wonderful form and is of a nice size. Please view photos as they are part and parcel of our description.
Date: Mid to late 1800s.
Origin: Probably Pennsylvania.
Size: 1 3/8" by 1 7/16" at the base and is 4" high.
Provenance: Collection of William Kelly Young of Fort Worth Texas.
Condition: The figure is in excellent condition. It has no cracks, repairs, or chips. It does have general crazing to the glaze and one small firing line which is original to the piece (about 1/4" below the hand on the broom stick in 6th and 7th photo). Please see photos to appreciate the condition and beauty of the piece.
In Closing: This is a great and very rare piece which is beautiful, solid and in great shape. The nice colored glaze and the beautiful details make it a very nice piece to display. This piece deserves a prominent spot in any redware or art pottery collection. Sure to be a wonderful conversation piece. Please view our other listings for the companion man miniature figure.
