Antique Silver Pill Box Nice Scroll Design with Flowers Marked 31 Italy 800
Description: Antique small rectangular silver pill box. The pill box has a very elaborate scroll design on the top and bottom which includes flowers. The sides are also decorated with what appears to be cut curved lines for decoration. The box has a hinged lid with a central thumb piece while the bottom portion of the box has a small protrusion to help open the box in conjunction with the thumb piece in the lid. The interior of the box is undecorated and has markings as follows; the lid is marked 31 ITALY 800 while the bottom is marked 31 indicating that both halves were designed to be together. The box has acquired a nice dark age patina or as we like to say it is tarnished and could use a good cleaning to bring out its full beauty, but we leave that to the discretion of the new owner. Date: Uncertain, but most likely sometime in the early to mid 1900s, could be earlier. Origin: Purchased at an estate auction in Southeastern Pennsylvania. The box was made in Italy.
Size: Measures ~1 5/8" by ~1 3/16" by ~1/4" and weighs ~15.8 grams.
Maker: Unknown.
Marks: Marked on the side of the lid "31 ITALY 800" and on the inside of the bottom portion "31". There is what could be an oval maker's mark between the ITALY and 800 which we are unable to decipher.
Distinguishing Characteristics - Most Interesting About The Piece: A nice antique pill box, which would make a great addition to your small box or pill box collection.
Condition: The silver box is in excellent condition with no problems. The hinged lid works great and the box has no breaks or repairs. The interior is clean with some dark spots in the corners and along the edges. The box has acquired a nice dark age patina or as we like to say it is tarnished and could use a good cleaning to bring out its full beauty, but we leave that to the discretion of the new owner. The box has some minor general wear to the exterior commensurate with the pieces age and utilitarian function. Just a great piece with a very nice look to it.
