Description: A good extremely fine hard times copper token. The November 1837 token shows a phoenix rising from flames on the obverse with the legend "SUBSTITUTE FOR SHIN PLASTERS" surrounding the image along the edge and the dated NOVR 1937 under it. The reverse has the words "NOT ONE CENT FOR TRIBUTE" in the center within a wreath with the legend "MILLIONS FOR DEFENCE" along the edge of the reverse surrounding the wreath. The token has a plain edge and is nicely toned. It weighs ~9.1 gm and is ~28 mm in diameter. The token refers to a meeting of representatives of leading banks to discuss the disposal of Shin Plasters or worthless banknotes of irresponsible banks and private parties at the time A great looking and very desirable copper Hard Times token, with a rarity index R1, to add to your collection.
