1700s Cast Bronze Restitution Medal Pope Gelasio or Gelasuis I Casper Lauffer Biographical Medal
Description: A nicely toned cast bronze biographical medal with the image of the bust of Pope and Saint Gelasius or Gelasio I who was pope in the period 492-496. Pope and Saint Gelasius was one of a couple of popes originating from Africa. The obverse of the medal shows the bust of the pope facing left having a halo on to of his head with the inscription "S.GELASIVS.PONT.MAX." surrounding the pontiff's bust. The bottom of the bust has initials of which we only identify the letter B for the artist who designed the medal. The reverse shows Latin inscription which represents biographical information about the pops. This medal is one of a series issued by Casper Lauffer in 1700s to commemorate popes for which no medals were issued during the reign. The medal is listed in Modesti Volume V as 2149. The medal has light toning with nice eye appeal. The edge of the medal is plain. This is a nice looking medal, which would make a worthy addition to any collection.
