1837 Hard Times Token Jackson I Take Responsibility Van Buren Metallic Currency
Description: A good very fine or better hard times copper token. The circa 1837 token shows president Andrew Jackson with a sword and a purse popping out of a chest with the inscription "I TAKE THE RESPONSIBILITY" along the edge on the obverse. The reverse shows a ship in rough waters with the legend "VAN BUREN METALLIC CURRENCY" and the date 1837 surrounding the scene along the edge. The token has a plain edge and is nicely toned. It weighs ~10.5 gm and is ~28.5 mm in diameter. The token, which was in circulation during the 1830s and 40s was mocking president Jackson's economic policies. A great looking and very desirable copper Hard Times token, with a rarity index R1, to add to your collection. Weight and Size: The copper token weighs ~2.4 grams, is ~20 millimeters in diameter.
Maker: Scovill Manufacturing Company of Waterbury Connecticut.
Marks: marked with the letter "H" below the chest on the obverse.
Condition: The token is in good very fine or much better condition. It is nicely toned and has its details very well preserved. The token is soiled and shows honest even wear throughout.
