1920s Figural Cast Iron Butterfly Doorknocker Marked VS 70135
Description: This is a circa 1920s figural cast iron doorknocker. This doorknocker is in the shape of a butterfly. This is nice and uncommon design that is beautiful and very well done. The knocker shows details of the butterfly's wings and body. The butterfly is attached to an oval backing which is decorated with roses. The knocker is unpainted and shows some signs of surface oxidation, which gives it quite a bit of character. The butterfly swings on a pivot attached to an oval backing. The backing which has a raised design of roses. The end of the butterfly hits the backing when raised and let go thus creating the knocking sound. The backing has two holes where it can be screwed or nailed onto a door. The back of the piece is marked in raised lettering "PATENTED MAY 11 1926" and the numbers "70138" under a stamped upside triangle with the letters VS within it. Date: Uncertain but most likely circa 1920's.
Origin: Purchased at an estate sale in southeastern Pennsylvania.
Size: The back measures 3 1/2" by 2 5/8" while the butterfly measures ~2 1/4" at its tallest and ~2 5/8" at its widest. The piece weighs about 6.4 ounces.
Marks: The back of the piece is marked in raised lettering "PATENTED MAY 11 1926" and the numbers "70138" under a stamped upside triangle with the letters VS within it.

Condition: In very good condition with no breaks or repairs. The piece has several minor surface scratches and some minor surface rust. The knocker has no breaks or repairs and works very well. It is all original with its original swivel pin. Please see photo for additional condition information.
