"The short history tells what the American soldiers did in France. Histories of the divisions of the A. E. F. that saw active service in France were compiled from the War Department records with the advice and assistance of the Historical Section of the Army War College. An honor list of those who fell in action in Alsace-Lorraine was compiled from the official casualty records. Over four hundred carefully selected war pictures were obtained from the United States Signal Corps. [-] I trust that this work may serve in this and in many other ways to recognize the debt to America of Alsace-Lorraine and its many sons, who have come to the United States. In preparing this work I hope I have to some extent discharged the debt that I myself, a native Alsatian, born under the French flag, owe to the country of my adoption." (From Charles Blumenthal's Foreword).
