1937 Thomas Stahl Redware Glazed Speckled Green Covered Jar Powder Valley PA

  • $ 127.77

Description: A beautiful glazed redware storage jar or crock with wide flared mouth having a loosely fitting domed cover with a central finial. The jar, which was hand made by Thomas Stahl in 1937, has a flat round base with curved rising sides ending in a high shoulder. The shoulder supports a short collar like neck ending in a wide outwards flared mouth. The piece has two lug handles on opposite sides with two parallel incised lines as decoration. The piece is glazed inside and out but not on the bottom. The jar has a coloring typical of the Stahl Pottery. It is greenish with darker green speckles and an occasional brownish splotch in the form of dots varying in size throughout. This small size jar was obviously made and comes with a dome shaped lid having a central knob-like finial. It is not certain to us that the lid is original to the piece or a marriage, but we are selling the piece as found with the lid, which looks great on top. The jar has two incised parallel lines on the outside along the shoulder for decoration. The jar has a shaped base, which extends outward beyond the bottom of the sides of the jar. The piece is glazed inside and out but not on the bottom, which shows typical coloring of unglazed redware. The bottom is signed and dated by Thomas Stahl. The piece is all original and is in very good condition. It has no breaks and no repairs. The lid has a small chip at the edge, which we show in the 6th photo. The piece has general crazing to the glaze, which is difficult to see because of the color, but is there. It also has some of the usual manufacturing defects you would expect in a primitive piece of redware of this vintage such as pops, slubs, areas where the glaze did not fully flow, and unglazed spots. These issues are minor and this piece has very few of them. Be that as it may, this is just a great looking piece made in the Stahl Pottery in Powder Valley Pennsylvania. The bottom shows details about the potter and the date it was made. Please carefully review the photos presented as they are part and parcel of our description.
