1942 Painted Bent Wood Box Decorated Lift Off Lid Tulips and Birds
Description: Antique folk art, American, rather large round bentwood or band box. This Shaker type box is a 1942 reproduction of antique bentwood spice boxes, which were mad in the mid 1800s in the Mid Atlantic region of the United States and were treasured by the Pennsylvania Dutch people. The box has a lift-off lid and is made of bentwood. The top of the lid is decorated with a floral and tulip design with two birds surrounding the flowers. The sides of the box are undecorated but the entire box is finished with a brown finish that shows the wood grain and is beautiful. The lid has the letters AD and the number '42 surrounding the central tulip suggesting that the box was made in 1942. The bottom of the box is signed as to the artist. Finally the box has holes on the sides where it is fitted with leather loops that would accommodate a leather or wire handle, which is missing. The inside is clean and it is held together with metal tacks (brassy looking) while the top and bottom are held to the side wall with metal pegs. Please view the photos presented as they are part and parcel of our description.
Origin: USA, probably Southeastern Pennsylvania.
Size: The box is 9 3/4" in diameter and is 5" high with the lid on.
Marks: Marked "AD '42" on lid and "Peg Hall" on the bottom. We assume Peg is the artist who decorated the box.
Distinguishing Characteristics - Most Interesting About The Piece: A nice vintage piece of Americana.
Condition: The box is in good condition. It appears to be lacquered. It does have spots of paint on the lid and sides. We are assuming that the box was left unprotected while the place was being painted. These paint spots do not distract of the box's beauty and quality. In addition, the box has scratches through out the surface and it is also missing the handle, which we assume would have been inserted in the leather loops fixed to the side. Other than that the piece is nice and has no other observable problems. This is a charmer box which would be a very nice decorative accent in your country home.
