1943 Egypt 10 Pounds Banknote Pick Number 23b Signature Nixon Beautiful Fine or Much Better Currency
Description: A beautiful fine or much better banknote from Egypt. This is the February 2, 1943 ten pounds. This is a beautiful and very colorful large banknote. The banknote has orange, yellow, light blue, brown, and green colors throughout on the front. It depicts the mosque of Sultan Qala'un the famous Bahari Mamluk ruler, who ruled Egypt in the period 1279 – 1290 to right of the front. It has a white circle to the left of the front where the water mark is located. The back is green with areas of color (orange, yellow and brown). The back depicts a scene of a water wheel run by a buffalo to the left and palm trees in the center and again having the white circle where the watermark is located. The front of the note is written in Arabic and English lettering while the back is in Arabic, with only the denomination being in English. The note shows the denomination on both the front and back. The note has a watermark showing the head of a Pharaoh, however, Krause's Catalog suggests it is the Sphinx. This particular note has the serial number 019732 and is series X/69. The note appears to have been flattened but still has quite a bit of crispiness to the paper. It was issued by the National Bank of Egypt and is signed by N. Nixon, who was the governor of the National Bank of Egypt at the time. Please carefully review the scan provided as it is part and parcel of our description.
Date: 2nd February 1943.
Printer: Bradbury Wilkinson & Co. of New Malden, Surrey, England.
Size: The banknote measures ~7 5/16" by ~4".
Pick Number: P23b.
Condition: I would grade this banknote as a good fine or much better with all the details being very well preserved. The note has several folds both vertical and horizontal, has general wrinkling, is lightly soiled, and has minor staining. It has general crispiness to the paper. The banknote has no graffiti, which is a miracle for a 10 pounds Egyptian banknote. The note appears to have been flattened (you can see where the folds and wrinkling were but it does not fold). The corners have minor rounding and show signs of being creased. The note has no pinholes but has several short and small tears along the edges (two on the right edge near the middle, one on the bottom edge and but none of them reaches the design. The note also has a small loss on the top edge measuring ~1/4" by ~1/8" with a short tear extending below it. Please see photo for additional condition information.
