1947 Redware Yellow Color Creamer Tulip Sgraffito Decoration Oley Valley Pottery
Description: A 1947 glazed tulip-shaped redware creamer having an applied handle and a spout. The creamer is yellow in color with a brown colored sgraffito design showing two tulip flowers one on each side of the creamer. The creamer is also glazed on the inside and has a brown color. It has an applied handle that is also glazed and is brown in color. The bottom of the creamer is round, has a foot and is glazed again with brown coloring. The piece has 4 circles that look like sieves along the top near the coggled rim/edge. A very nice piece of folk art pottery made at the Oley Valley Pottery in southeastern Pennsylvania. The piece is marked on the bottom of the base "OVP 1947" in incised letters under glaze. A great piece of Oley Valley Pottery to add to your collection. Date: The piece is 1947.
Origin: Oley Valley Pennsylvania
Size: Measures ~2 1/8" in diameter at the base and ~2 1/2" in diameter at the top. It is ~4 1/4" at its widest, including the spout and handle, and is ~3 1/4" high. The piece weighs a little over 6.6 ounces.
Maker: Oley Valley Pottery.
Marks: Marked "OVP; 1947" incised in two lines on the bottom of the base, under glaze. See Last photo for details.
Condition: The creamer is in very good condition with no chips, breaks, hairlines, or repairs. The piece has general crazing to the glaze and two areas where the glaze is lost. These can be seen in the second and third phot under the bottom leaf of the tulip. There is also a minor flake at the foot of the base where you can see the color of the redware which is exposed (see last photo at 8 o'clock) and there are two spots of residual material stuck to the foot from the kiln (6th photo at 5 & 10 o'clock). These are an artifact of the making of the piece. The piece also has some of the normal defects you would expect in a piece of primitive pottery of this type such as spots where the glaze did not fully flow, pops, slubs, and surface roughness. Be that as it may, this is a great piece of Southeastern Pennsylvania Redware pottery, in very good condition after being around for 77 years, worthy of a spot in your collection.
