1951 Stahl Redware Miniature Jar Burnished Unglazed Exterior w/ Blue Decoration

  • $ 77.77

Description: A 1951 unglazed redware slightly bulbous shaped small jar or miniature crock with rounded rim. The jar is burnished on the exterior with an impressed line about a third of the way down from the top, which is colored in light blue. The piece is also unglazed on the inside and the base. The mini crock or jar has a rounded flat base with outwards rising straight sides that go about on third the way to the top. The sides rise vertically and in a straight fashion to the rounded rim. The base is incised with indication as to the maker and when it was made. The inside of the jar shows the lines indicating the piece was wheel thrown. The piece is in excellent condition with no observable damage. The piece is lightly soiled but still looks great. It would display nicely in your collection. The piece is signed and dated by the potter, which we assume is Russell R. Stahl, since it is dated 1951. A nice piece of Stahl pottery to add to your collection. Please carefully review the photos presented as they are part and parcel of our description.

Date: The piece is dated 12/11/51.

Origin: Powder Valley, in Lehigh County Pennsylvania

Size: Measures ~2" in diameter at the base, is ~3 1/2" in diameter at the top, and is ~2 3/4" high. The top opening is ~2 3/4" in diameter with the rolled rim being ~5/8" wide. The piece weighs about 8 ounces.

Maker: Uncertain, but most likely Russell Stahl.

Marks: Marked with the underlined words "By; Stahl; 12/11/51" incised in three lines on the bottom of the base. See Last photo for details.

Condition: The mini crock is in excellent condition with no breaks, repairs, chips, or hairlines. The jar is lightly soiled but truly nothing of concern. The piece also has some of the normal defects you would expect in a piece of primitive pottery of this type such as pops, slubs, and surface roughness. The piece has a few of those on the inside and the top of the rim. Be that as it may, this a beautiful and unusual piece which would display nicely in y our collection. Please see photos for additional condition information.
