1978 Glazed Redware Large Shallow Plate Brown Rooster On Dark Blue or Black Background By Ned Foltz
Description: A beautiful glazed redware large (~9" diameter) shallow plate with a coggled edge by Ned Foltz of Reinholds. Pennsylvania. This glazed dish has dark blue or black colored background with dark with a brown sgraffito design depicting a rooster standing. The rooster is brown with details of its tail feathers, its comb, its waddle, its wing, and its claws on the low-profile stand. This is a very nice and unusual design for Foltz. The plate has a thick construction and is rather heavy. It has a flattened base with flared, rounded and rather flat sides that end at a coggled edge. The base as well as the exterior wall are not glazed and show the typical color of unglazed redware. The plate has a rather shallow profile. The plate is signed and dated by Ned Foltz. Size: Measures ~9" in diameter and is ~1"heigh. The piece weighs over 2 pounds and one ounce.

Marks: Marked on the bottom with the words "c. n. Foltz; the Foltz Pottery; Reinholds Pa; 1978" with a cross to the bottom of it all.
Distinguishing Characteristics - Most Interesting About The Piece: This is a beautiful redware plate with a nice decorative and rather unusual design for Ned Foltz. It is rather substantial and weighs over 2 pounds. A definite beauty deserving of a prominent spot in any redware collection.
Condition: Plate is in very good condition. It has no cracks, no chips, no hairlines, and no repairs. The plate has two paper labels attached to the bottom which we chose not to remove and leave that to the discretion of the new owner. The plate also has general crazing to the glaze. Moreover, it has a few of the usual defects you would expect with all these primitive redware pieces such as pops, slubs, unglazed areas, slip error, and uneven spots. Two spots that represent such errors are shown in the last two photos. One where the coloring did not flow completely and the other which appears to be a pop. These are original to the making and do not distract from the plate's beauty or quality. Because of the two small defects we discussed above we are selling the plate AS IS at a fraction of its true value. Please see photos for additional condition information.
