1982 Large Royal Doulton Toby Mug Antagonist Collection Ulysses S. Grant vs. Robert E. Lee Ltd. Ed. No. 4462 of 9500 By Michael Abberley
Description: This is a Beautiful hand-made and hand-decorated large figural mug by the Royal Doulton Company. This mug, which was designed by Michael Abberley, is from the Antagonists' Collection and is titled "The Civil War; Ulysses S. Grant/Robert E. Lee." The mug depicts the figure of Ulysses S. Grant the famous Union general, on one side and the figure of Robert E. Lee the Confederate general who fought against him during the civil war. Both faces are colored in flesh tone with both generals wearing uniforms in the colors of their respective armies. The mug has an applied handle in the form of a two sided flag with one side being the Union flag and the other side being the Confederate flag. The bottom of the mug is marked with the Royal Doulton mark and is dated 1982. The mug is nicely glazed and has very vivid colors. It has red, flesh tones, dark blue, gold, white, brown, grays and black. A real nice piece which is very desirable by collectors of Toby Mugs and the Civil War. Size: The mug is ~7" high, ~7 1/4" at its widest including the handle, and the base is ~6" by ~4 1/4". The piece weighs about two pounds.

Marks: On the base in dark green or black under glaze the following markings: Royal Doulton Mark with a lion over a crown on top of a circle having four "D"s in its center and the words Made in England; Royal Doulton; England around it. It also has the words "The Antagonists' Collection; D6698; The Civil War; Ulysses S. Grant/Robert E. Lee; Hand Made and Hand Decorated; Designed by Michael Abberley followed by his signature; (c) Copyright Royal Doulton Tableware Limited 1982; Worldwide Limited Edition of 500. This is Number 4462." Distinguishing Characteristics - Most Interesting About The Piece: This is a real nice 35 years old piece in great condition, which is very desirable by collectors of Toby Mugs and Civil War related items.
Condition: The Mug is in excellent condition. It has no chips, cracks, hairlines, crazing, or repairs. It is soiled on the inside as well as along the edge of the base.
