1984-1988 Great Britain Twenty Pounds Queen Elizabeth Signed Somerset Prefix 53A

  • $ 97.77

Description: A nice choice extremely fine to about uncirculated English 20 pounds banknote. This banknote was issued in 1984 through 1988 and is purple, blue, and gold in color on multi colored underprint. The note shows Queen Elizabeth II facing forward to the right of the front. There is also the image of Saint George slaying the dragon in the center and a small seal in the bottom showing Britannia seated, again on the front. The back has the same color scheme as the front and displays the image of the statue of William Shakespeare with a scene of Romeo and Juliet. The front has one signature, displays the denomination and the serial number. The back also displays the denomination. The banknote has a watermark showing the bust of Shakespeare. The note is signed by D.H.F. Somerset the Chief Cashier the Bank of England at the time and has the prefix 53A. This particular note has the serial number 410763 and has a segmented security thread right of center. Please carefully review the scans presented as they are part and parcel of our description.

Date: 1984-1988.

Printer: Bank of England.

Size: Measures ~6 1/4" by ~3 1/2".

Pick Number: P 380d and is listed in the Banknote Book as B188a.

Condition: I would grade this banknote as choice extremely fine to about uncirculated or even better with all the details being very well preserved. The note has no apparent creases or folds. It is clean with some light soiling at the bottom center of the front and back. It has no stains, no graffiti, no splits, no tears, no pinholes, and no repairs. The corners are intact and squared with minimum rounding if any. The banknote has a bit of vertical waviness in the center to the left of the security thread. It is not clear to us what happened but it is there. All these issues, in our opinion, are probably the product of mishandling by previous owner as opposed to true circulation. The note is crisp, retains its sheen, and its colors are vivid with no fading. The note is just beautiful and in good condition. Please see scans for additional condition
