1984 Redware Plate Glazed with Slip Decoration Gingerbread Man Christmas Cookies by Ned Foltz
Description: Shallow round redware plate with a round bottom and flared sides ending at a coggled rim. The plate itself is decorated with a yellowish brownish slip decoration representing a gingerbread man with the words Christmas Cookies above it in cursive calligraphy and a wavy line below it. The entire plate is glazed with a dark brown colored background. The back has the typical redware color, is plain and signed by the artist.
Origin: Reinholds, Lancaster County, Pennsylvania.
Size: 9 1/4" diameter and 1 1/2" deep.
Maker: C. Ned Foltz.
Marks: Foltz Pottery Mark and words written in cursive calligraphy "C. N. Foltz; Pa; 1984; t" on the bottom of the plate.
Distinguishing Characteristics - Most Interesting About The Piece: This is a nice and substantial, but delicate piece weighing over 1 1/2 pounds. This piece is made in the best Pennsylvania Dutch style by a master potter with the right heritage.
Condition: Plate/bowl is in excellent like new condition with no chips, repairs, or hairlines. It does have crazing to the glaze. In addition, the plate has an original 2" firing crack which can be seen at 6:00 and goes through the plate. This does not affect the integrity of the plate and actually gives it character and makes it unique.
In Closing: This is a beautiful plate in excellent condition after being around for over 20 years. Definitely deserves a prominent spot in your redware collection.
