1986 Redware Glazed Sgraffito Decorated Round 7" Plate Large Bird Perched on Fence By Lester Breininger
Description: A nice small glazed and sgraffito decorated redware pie plate. The plate has a flat base with flared rounded sides rising to a lightly coggeled edge. The plate is decorated with a sgraffito design depicting a large bird with a standing feather on its head standing on a wooden fence. There is a door to the left of the plate possibly an outhouse. There are a flower within the design. The plate is yellow in color with the design itself being in the reddish-brown coloring typical of redware sgraffito decoration and is surrounded with green sponged highlights indicative of copper oxide all on the yellow background. The plate was made in the studios of Lester Breininger on July 31, 1986 (33 years ago). This type of decoration is very much in the Pennsylvania Dutch style common in southeastern Pennsylvania specifically in Bucks, Montgomery, Chester, and Lancaster counties. The plate is glazed on the inside but not on the back. The unglazed back has the characteristic color of unglazed redware and is signed by the artist. Condition: Plate is in very good condition. It has no cracks, chips, repairs, or hairlines. The plate has crazing to the glaze throughout and also has a small flake too the coloring at ~8:00 o'clock which we also show in t he last photo. This is truly small and does not distract from the beauty and quality of the plate. Additionally, the plate has a few of the usual defects you would expect with all these primitive redware pieces such as pops, slubs, unglazed areas and uneven spots. However, this plate has a minimum number of these, which are hardly noticeable. Please see photos for additional condition information and to appreciate the beauty of this piece.
