1987 Ned Foltz Redware Brown Colored Plate Chickens, Hearts, Tulips Decoration
Description: A beautiful redware flat plate with a coggled rim. This glazed dish has redish-brown colored background with dark brown, almost black, colored mottling along the coggled edge or rim. There is a dark brown design in the center of the dish consisting of two chickens facing each other and surrounded by stylized hearts and tulips as well as miseleneous shapes in a typicl Pennsylvania Dutch style. The plate has thick structure and is rather heavy. It has a slightly flattened base with flared and rather flat sides that end at a coggled edge. The base as well as the exterior wall are not glazed and show the typical color of unglazed redware. The plate is signed and dated by the artist. Origin: Reinholds, Lancaster County, Pennsylvania.
Size: Measures ~7 5/8" in diameter and is ~1 3/8"heigh. The piece weighs almost 1 pound and 6 ounces

Marks: Marked with Foltz Pottery mark with the words "c. n. Foltz; 1987" surrounding the mark with a cross to the bottom of it all on bottom of the base.
Distinguishing Characteristics - Most Interesting About The Piece: This is a beautiful redware plate made in the best Pennsylvania Dutch tradition of Southeastern Pennsylvania. It is rather substantial and weighs over one pound and 5 ouncess. A definite beauty deserving of a prominent spot in any redware collection. Condition: Plate is in very good condition. It has no cracks, no repairs, and no hairlines. The plate has general crazing to the glaze. The plate also has some minor scuff marks on the top which can be seen in the photos. Finally, the plate has a few of the usual defects you would expect in primitive redware pieces like this such as pops, slubs, uneven surfaces, roughness to the surface, and spots that were not completely covered by the glaze. Be that as it may, this is a beautiful and substantial piece by a great master potter, which would look great in your collection. Please see photos for additional condition information.
