1990 Glazed Redware Penny Bank Brown Colored Beehive Shape By Lester Breininger
Description: This is a 1990 redware penny bank glazed with a dark brown coloring with raised yellow slip decoration. The piece is in the shape of a beehive with a button shaped finial on top. The bank has a round flat base with sides that rise outwards in a straight manner. The sides go to a rounded shoulder which has a slot for the coins to be inserted. The rounded shoulder supports the finial. This beautiful glazed redware bank was made by Lester Breininger as evidenced by the mark LB. Please see photo to appreciate the beautiful design and colors. Origin: Robesonia, Berks County Pennsylvania.
Size: The bank is ~2 3/4" in diameter at the base and is ~4" high to the top of the finial. The piece weighs ~8.5 ounces.
Maker: Lester Breininger.
Marks: Marked "LB 90 PA" in print calligraphy on the bottom.
Distinguishing Characteristics - Most Interesting About The Piece: This is a very nice Breininger piece with a nice shape, look, and colors made by the Master potter himself. Mr. Breininger has passed away in December 2011 and his pottery has become highly desirable.
Condition: The bank is in very good condition with no cracks, no repairs, no chips, or hairlines. Careful examination of piece did not reveal the presence of signs of glaze crazing. The piece also has some of the normal defects you would expect in a piece of primitive pottery of this type such as spots where the glaze did not fully flow, pops, slubs, and surface roughness. This particular piece has a minimum of these issues. Finally, the bank came to us with a coin in it and we are selling as found with the coin still in it and you can hear it. A solid and intact piece, which would make a great addition to your collection. Please see photos for additional condition information.
