1991 Glazed Redware Egg Sgraffito Design American Flags USA 1991 by Lester Breininger

Description: A nice size redware egg made by Lester Breininger. It is beautifully decorated with a sgraffito design depicting two American flags crossed with the letters USA above them and the date 1991 below them. This yellow and brown colored egg is dated 1991 on the front within the design and is signed LB PA for Lester Breininger on the back. The top of the egg is yellow in color with a brown sgraffito design, while the bottom of the egg is brown and has the maker's mark. The colors of the egg are typical Pennsylvania Dutch colors. The back of the egg or its base is slightly flat and brown in color. This is a very nice redware egg with classic Pennsylvania Dutch colors. The egg is entirely glazed and looks great. Please carefully review photos as they are part and parcel of our description.

Origin: Robesonia, Berks County, Pennsylvania.

Size: This egg measures ~3 1/4" long and is ~2 1/4" high and ~2 1/2" wide. The piece weighs about 4.6 ounces.

Maker: Lester Breininger.

Marks: The egg is marked on the bottom with the inscription LB PA in black under-glaze.

Distinguishing Characteristics - Most Interesting About The Piece: This is a nice piece made by Lester Breininger the master himself. It is rather interesting and a great example of the master potter's work. It would make a great addition to any redware collection. Note that Mr. Breininger died in December 2011 and as such work by him personally has become very desirable and sought-after. A nice and well made piece worthy of a spot in your collection of contemporary redware.

Condition: The egg is in very good condition. It has no cracks, no repairs, or hairlines. The piece has signs of onset of crazing to the glaze in the form of a line or two within the glaze. The egg does have a few of the usual defects you would expect with all these primitive redware pieces such as pops, slubs, unglazed areas and uneven spots. However, these are at a minimum and can barely be seen in the photos but can be felt. Regardless this is a beautiful piece in good shape after 27 years of being around. Please see photos to appreciate its beauty and for additional condition information.
