Breininger 1993 Glazed Redware Figurine Monkey With Banana on Elephant Back
Description: This is an unusual 1993 redware figurine made by the Breininger Pottery in Robesonia, PA. The figurine shows a monkey with a banana in hand laying on his stomach on the back of an elephant. The monkey which is colored in yellow with blotches of green, indicative of copper oxide, is textured with sgraffito lines to give the feel of fur. He is wearing a hat and holding a banana in one hand while resting his head on the other. The monkey is laying on his stomach on a yellow blanket spread on the back of a brown colored elephant. The brown colored elephant has black splotches indicative of manganese glazing. He is standing on all four with his trunk tucked under his mouth. A nice and very unusual redware figuring made in the studios of Lester Breininger. The piece is entirely glazed except for the base which shows the color of unglazed redware. The base shows the date and the name of the pottery. This beautiful whimsical glazed redware piece was made at the Breininger Pottery in Robesonia, Berks County Pennsylvania in 1993 (28 years ago).
