1994 Breininger Redware Glazed Bulbous Bottle Sgraffito PA Dutch Flowers Birds
Description: A very nice glazed bulbous bottle with sgraffito decoration showing flowers, bird, and a saying in Pennsylvania Dutch. The bottle was made at the Breininger pottery in Robesonia, PA. This bottle, which has what we would characterize as very much a Pennsylvania Dutch traditional design, shows a floral design and a bird as well as foliate. It also displays a saying in what we believe is Pennsylvania Dutch which goes like this "Aus der erde mit verstand macht der heffner allechand" which would translate to "Out of the earth understanding makes the potter everything." The bottle has a yellow colored background with green splotches (copper oxide) as decorative highlights throughout the sgraffito decoration. The flowers are near the base, with a bird perched on the branch, and near the top. There is a separation in the middle with the German saying mentioned above. Just a very interesting and unusual design. The bottle has a flat round base which flares outwards with rounded sides rising to a neck, which then rises to a rolled open mouth. The base of the bottle is unglazed and shows the usual coloring of unglazed redware. It has very classic Pennsylvania Dutch colors and shape with a purely Pennsylvania German design. Please carefully review the photos presented as they are part and parcel of our description.
