2003 Glazed Oval Redware Sgraffito Decorated Plate Brown with Green Star by Lester Breininger
Description: A nice size and well decorated redware oval plate by The Breininger Pottery. The oval shaped plate has a flat base with slightly rounded flared sides. The sides terminate at a slightly coggled rim. The exterior of the plate as well as the bottom are not glazed and display the typical coloring of unglazed redware pottery. The inside is glazed with a brown colored background and displays a sgraffito design showing a central six point star with what looks like flowers between the points and in the center of the star. The edge of the plate has a scalloped decorative design with a brown colored border. The back of the plate has indication about the maker and the date it was made. A nicely decorated redware plate of unusual design and colors made in the studios of a master potter. Please carefully review photos as they are part and parcel of our description.
Date: September 17, 2003.
Origin: Robesonia, Berks County, Pennsylvania.
Size: The plate measures ~10" by ~7 1/4" and is ~1 1/2" high. The piece weighs about one pound and three ounces.
Maker: Lester Breininger.
Marks: Marked "Breininger Pottery; Robesonia PA; September 17, 2003; Blue Skies" in cursive calligraphy on the bottom.
Distinguishing Characteristics - Most Interesting About The Piece: This is a very nice piece having unusual design and colors made in the studio of a master potter with the Pennsylvania Dutch heritage. Needless to say Mr. Breininger has passed away in December 2011 and pottery made in his studio has become highly desirable.
Condition: Plate is in excellent condition with no breaks, no repairs, and no chips. Careful examination of the plate with a 10X loop did not reveal any crazing to the glaze, which is rather unusual for such a piece of folk pottery. The only thing we see is several lighter color spots along the edge (See the bottom edge on the first photo) which are under the glaze so they are artifacts of the making and original to the piece. These do not compromise the integrity of the plate, its quality, or beauty. This is a beautiful plate in great condition, which would make a great addition to your collection. Please see photos for additional condition information.
