2005 Breininger Redware Glazed Sgraffito 7" Plate Robesonia, PA Sesquicentennial
Description: This is a nice glazed and sgraffito decorated redware plate in the best Pennsylvania Dutch tradition, made at the Breininger Pottery. The plate has a slightly flattened base with flared rounded sides rising to a lightly coggled edge. The plate is decorated with a sgraffito design depicting a large building or church with a tree and a bird above it. The plate has the word "Robesonia" above the design and the dates "1855-2005" below it. It is obviously a plate made to commemorate the Sesquicentennial celebration for the city or Robesonia , Pennsylvania where Mr. Lester Breininger used to live. The plate has a yellow colored ground with the sgraffito design showing brown colors. The plate also has green highlight indicative of copper oxide. The plate is glazed with unglazed back having the characteristic color of unglazed redware. The back is marked "Breininger Pottery; Robesonia, Pa; November 8, 2005; clear skies". This type of decoration is very much in the Pennsylvania Dutch style common in southeastern Pennsylvania specifically in Bucks, Montgomery, Chester, and Lancaster counties. Distinguishing Characteristics - Most Interesting About The Piece: A beautiful plate made in the best Pennsylvania German tradition at the Breininger Pottery under the supervision of Lester Breininger himself the famous potter with the correct heritage. A beautiful redware piece, which deserves a prominent spot in your redware collection. Mr. Breininger died in 1911 and his pottery became well thought after ever since.
Condition: Plate is in excellent condition. It has no cracks, chips, repairs, or hairlines. The plate has general crazing to the glaze throughout. The plate also has a few of the usual defects you would expect with all these primitive redware pieces such as pops, slubs, unglazed areas and uneven spots. However, this plate has a minimum number of these, which are hardly noticeable. A nice redware commemorative plate to add to your collection.
