2011 Redware Miniature Pie Plate Glazed with Sgraffito Decoration Rooster, Hearts & Tulip by Lester Breininger

Description: A smaller or miniature ~5 1/2" redware pie plate from the Breininger Pottery. The plate has round flat base with slightly rounded flared sides. The sides terminate at a plain rim. The exterior of the plate as well as the bottom are not glazed and display the typical coloring of unglazed redware pottery. The inside is glazed with a yellow ground having green highlights (copper oxide) and has sgraffito decoration. The decoration depicts a rooster standing in the middle of a field with big puffy clouds above and green grass below. The roster has a wing that is in the form of a heart and his a comb is also in the form of a heart. There is a tulip flower in front of the rooster. This plate encompasses three of the top design elements used by the Pennsylvania Dutch people of Lancaster PA, namely the tulip, the heart and of course the rooster, wow! This is a beautiful miniature plate that would make a nice addition to your collection. The back of the plate is marked as to the maker and the date the piece was made. Size: The plate is ~5 1/2" in diameter and is ~1 1/4" high. The piece weighs almost 8 ounces.

Marks: Marked "Breininger Pottery; Robesonia PA; August 2, 2011; Sunny Skies" in cursive calligraphy on bottom.

Distinguishing Characteristics - Most Interesting About The Piece: This is a very nice piece made in the studios of Mr. Lester Breininger in the best Pennsylvania Dutch pottery tradition. It does contain all three top elements of decoration in the PA Dutch community, namely the heart, the tulip and the rooster. A piece that is sure to become a valuable collector item as time goes by. Condition: Plate is in excellent condition with no cracks, repairs, hairlines, or crazing to the glaze. It is in great condition with bright and vivid colors.
