The carving, which we believe was done in Berks County Pennsylvania, has wire legs and is mounted on a salvaged turned knob. The bird has two black eyes and black highlights for feathers in the wing, the tail, and the under-body. The knob is brown in color and has a hole in the center of the bottom. A great piece of folk art to add to your collection. Please carefully review the photos presented as they are part and parcel of our description. Date: Uncertain but most likely mid 1900s (mid 20th century).
Origin: Purchased at an estate auction in Southeastern Pennsylvania. We believe the piece was made in Berks County, Pennsylvania.
Size: The bird itself is ~5" long, ~3/4" wide, and the piece is ~3 1/2" at its highest. The base itself is ~2" in diameter and is ~1 1/4" high. The piece weighs about 1.5 ounces.
Distinguishing Characteristics - Most Interesting About The Piece: Truly a nice piece of American folk art in the best tradition of Pennsylvania Dutch art work, which would make a worthy addition to your collection or as a decorative accent in your home.
Condition: The carving is in excellent condition, with no breaks, cracks, losses, or repairs. It does have minor scratches and minimal loss to the finish. A great folk art carving to add to your collection. We believe that the round spot near the end of the bird's left wing (see the first photo) is accumulated paint on a knot in the wood and is original to the making of the piece. Please see photos for additional condition information.
