Ambrotype 1/9 Plate Photo of Gentleman in Fashionable Attire With Beard In Case
Description: Offered here is 1/9 plate ambrotype of a handsomely dressed young gentleman. He has a dark black beard and a full head. He is dressed in a dark coat and a white shirt with some sort of a tie around his neck. The photo is in a Gutta-percha or hard plastic case with a red velvet padding in the cover. The case has a hook to close it. The case is intact with some minor wear. Please carefully review the photos presented as they are part and parcel pf our description.
Date: Uncertain but most likely late 1850s.
Origin: USA.
Size: The piece measures ~2 7/8" by ~2 3/8" when closed. The piece weighs abiut 1.5 ounces.
Maker: Unknown.
Marks: Unmarked and we chose not to pull out the image to see if it is marked.
Condition: The photo appears to be in very good condition as is the case. The entire piece is a bit soiled but other than that all in all the piece is inn very good condition for being around for over 150 years. The hook latches properly and locks the case as it should. Because we did not open the piece to examine it, we are not certain if it is indeed an Ambrotype or an encased tintype. Be that as it may, this is still a great old photo from the 1850s-1860s, which would make a nice addition to your collection. The piece shows no apparent oxidation to the brass frame and the hinge of the case is mostly intact with ~1/2" break on the bottom. A nice piece to add to your collection.
