Antique 14 Karat Gold Matchsafe or Vesta in Fitted Case Made for Tiffany & Co. Precious Stone Thumb Piece
Description: Antique pocket match safe, matchsafe or vesta made of 14 karat gold. This match safe has a stripped design on the exterior with a clear round area on one side presumably to engrave with someone's initials. The match safe comes in its original fitted case lined in velvet and marked TIFFANY & Co. New York, Paris-London in gold lettering. The match safe itself has a hinged lid with a loop on top to attach to a chain and has the striker on the bottom. The front of the hinged lid has a small round precious? stone which serves as a thumb piece. The edge of the vesta where the lid rests is marked with the word "MADE FOR TIFFANY & Co." and has the scratched number 566 next to it. The inside of the vesta is also marked 14 K and then a maker's mark followed by what looks like the number 35. A great piece made for a famous and world renowned jeweler. Date: Uncertain, but most likely sometime between 1890 and 1910.
Origin: Purchased at an estate auction in Southeastern Pennsylvania.
Size: Measures ~2 1/4" by ~1 5/8" by ~5/16" and weighs ~30.3 grams or about 0.98 troy ounce or 19.62 dwt.
Maker: Unknown, but was made for Tiffany & Co.
Marks: Marked with the word "MADE FOR TIFFANY & Co." on the lip of the match safe. There is also markings on the inside of the match safe, which say 14 K and then a maker's mark followed by what looks like the number 35. The fitted box in which the matchsafe comes is marked in gold lettering "TIFFANY & Co. New York, Paris-London" on the inside of the lid.

Condition: The match safe is in excellent condition as is the box in which it comes with no major problems. The hinged lid works great and the matchsafe has no breaks or repairs. The vesta has a few minor and shallow scratches to the surface and the box in which it comes has some scuff marks on the bottom. A great piece for the most advanced collector.
