Antique Agateware or Graniteware Pail or Berry Bucket With Lid and Wire Handle Mottled Gray Enameling

Description: An large antique agateware or graniteware pail or covered berry bucket having a wire handle. The pail has a flat base and straight rising sides terminating in a rolled rim. The pail has a grayish mottled enameling inside and out and is black on the bottom. The sides of the pail a raised double line about a third of the way down from the top. It also has a wire handle, which swivels within two loops fastened to the sides near the top. The pail has a well fitting, enameled lid with a central wood finial. This is a miracle since normally these lids are lost with time. This is a beautiful American antique agateware pail having a beautiful design and shape. Date: Late 1800's to early 1900's.

Origin: Recently acquired at an estate sale in Southern New Jersey.

Size: The pail measure ~6 1/2" diameter at the base, it is ~5" high without the lid and it is ~6 3/4" high with the lid on to the top of the finial. The pail weighs slightly over one pound.

Marks: Unmarked.

Distinguishing Characteristics - Most Interesting About The Piece: This is a nice piece of antique Americana that would display nicely in any collection.

Condition: The pail is in general good condition and looks good to display. It does have several spots were the enameling is lost on the exterior, the interior, the bottom, and the lid. There are some rust spots especially in the inside at the seam where the base meats the sides. There is also some rust in the spots where the enameling is lost. The surface has minor scratches but no appreciable dings. The finial is solid, intact and secure in its position. This is a beautiful piece that is solid and would look great in any collection.
