Antique Art Nouveau Decorated Wood Collar Box Silk Lined Interior Metal Decoration on Exterior

Description: This is a very nice antique large wood collar box. The box which is made of wood and covered by some sort of maroon colored paper on the exterior and Moroccan paper on the bottom has metal decoration. The metal decoration which is the art nouveau style depict a woman's head in the center of the lid and a scroll along the sides of the lid. There is also a a floral metal strip along the bottom edge of the box on the front and sides but not the back. The hinged lid has a simple locking mechanism consisting of a metal latch which closes by engaging a short shaft attached to the bottom portion of the lock. The interior of the box is line with silk like material and has a cardboard central cylinder over which the collars would have been wrapped. A beautiful antique from the late 1800s or early 1900s from an era long gone. A beautiful piece to add to your collection. Origin: Purchased at an estate sale in Southeastern Pennsylvania.
Size: The box measures ~8 1/4" by ~7 1/4" and is ~5 1/4" high with lid closed. The piece weighs about 1 pound 5 ounces.
Distinguishing Characteristics - Most Interesting About The Piece: A nice, antique wood collar box with nice, unusual, and most interesting decorations. It would make a great addition to your wood box collection.
Condition: The box is in very good condition with no major problems. It has no breaks and no repairs. The hinge is intact and works as it should as does the latch closure. The box shows honest wear from age and use. The exterior is well preserved with some light soiling but no losses to the art nouveau metal decoration. The bottom shows some losses to the paper cover. The interior shows soiling and frayed material especially at the hinged portion most likely from opening and closing the box. The rest of the interior is intact but has considerable soiling. We believe it could be cleaned but we leave that to the new owner. Other than that the box is great looking and would make a great addition to your antique box collection.
