Antique Carved Wood Brick Shaped Butter Mold Fluted Sides and Floral Design

Description: A beautiful antique carved wood brick butter mold. This nice size brick mold is a one-piece mold with fluted sides and having finger slots on the side. The mold has an engraving of a flowers on stems with leaves on the inside. The exterior of the mold is plain but has the slots on the two long sides so that it may be held with your fingers. The edge of the mold has this scalloped lines which will give the piece of butter produced by this mold not only the floral design on top but a nice scalloped design on the sides of the resulting brick. These molds were very common in the 18th and 19th century in Switzerland and Austria. The piece is in very good condition for being around for almost 200 years. It does have age cracks on one of the two short sides, which can be seen in the photos. Please see Figures VII-60 and VII-61 on pages 216 and 217 in Paul Kinding Book "Butter Prints and Molds" published by Schiffer Publishing Ltd, in West Chester PA in 1986, for similar examples made in Austria and Switzerland. Date: Mid to late 1800s.

Origin: Purchased in an estate auction in Southeastern Pennsylvania. The piece was most likely made in either Switzerland or Austria. 

Size: The piece measures ~6" by ~4" by ~1 3/4" with the mold itself measuring ~4 7/8" by ~2 3/4" byy ~1 3/8". The mold weighs slightly over 8 ounces.

Marks: Unmarked. 

Distinguishing Characteristics - Most Interesting About The Piece: Very interesting and well-made butter mold with a nice and very desirable design. This is a nice European butter mold, which would make a nice addition to your collection. 

Condition: The piece is in very good condition. It has no breaks or repairs. It has general wear and soiling commensurate with its age and use. The piece has some surface scratches and light stains throughout. The mold has age cracks on one of the two short sides, which can be seen in the photos. Be that as it may, this does not distract from its quality or beauty. A nice piece which would make a nice addition to your collection.
