Antique Carved Wood Small Size Primitive Butter Print Wheat Sheaf Decoration Knob Shaped Handle
Description: A beautiful antique lathe turned wood wooden small butter print. The butter print, which appears to be made of a single piece of wood, is decorated with a deep carved wheat sheaf design. The print has a large flat surface with a deep carved design of wheat sheaf surrounded by a star on either side. The design is framed in double incised lines and the edge of the print is decorated with a repeating tear drop design. The print has a knob shaped handle on top. The entire piece appears to be made of a softwood. Although Paul Kinding's book "Butter Prints and Molds" Published by Schiffer Publishing Limited of West Chester, PA in 1986 shows many butter prints with the wheat sheaf design, non of them has the stars decoration, so we were unable to identify a similar example in the book. Please carefully review the photos carefully as they are part and parcel of our description.
Date: Uncertain, but most likely early to mid 1900's.
Origin: Southeastern Pennsylvania.
Size: Measures ~3 3/8" in diameter at the design part and is ~2 1/4" high. The piece weighs 2 ounces.
Distinguishing Characteristics - Most Interesting About The Piece: Very interesting antique butter print with a well done and rather nice design. A nice antique butter print having a nice warm dark patina, which would make a nice addition to your collection.
Condition: The piece is in excellent condition given its age and utilitarian function. Its color is closer to the color in the second photo than the others. It has no repairs, cracks, or losses. It has a few scratches and some soiling commensurate with its age. The piece also has a few minor nicks and a chip or two along the edge of the design portion (note the first photo at ~7 O'clock for the largest). It also has some minor loss to the finish in one of the tear drops (see the first photo at 11:30) as well as the last photo. The piece has developed a nice warm age patina which makes it look great. Please see photos to appreciate its beauty and condition.
