Antique Cast Iron Crimping or Pleating Roller Iron Wooden Handle North Brothers Manufacturing Co Philadelphia PA

Description: A great antique, circa 1880s, ironing implement. This is the cast iron fluter used for pleating and crimping material. It is made of cast iron and has a corrugated surface sitting on a cast iron painted base with four feet. The corrugated surface is hinged and closes a compartment which contains a heavy rectangular cast iron plate. The enclosed rectangle of cast iron can be heated then inserted back into the compartment resulting in the corrugated surface becoming hot. There is also a roller with corrugation that can be heated separately on a stove and then both the hot roller and the heated corrugated surface can be used to pleat or crimp material. The roller has a wooden handle. The sides of the base are painted in black with a green decorative line. See page 60 of Kathryn McNerney's book "Antique Iron, Identification and Values" published by Collector Books of Paducah, KY in 1984, for a similar example albeit with a metal handle. A great piece to add to your collection. Please carefully review the photos presented as they are part and parcel of our description.

Distinguishing Characteristics - Most Interesting About The Piece: This is a very nice antique, which is rather rare and very seldom comes by. This is really a substantial piece weighing over four and half pounds. A very nice antique which would make a great addition to your collection. Condition: It is in excellent condition, with no breaks, cracks, repairs or losses. It does show minimum wear, some soiling, and some spots of surface rust especially in the grooves and the heating plate. There are minor losses to the painted sides of the base.
