Antique Figural Pipe Tamper Brass Man Standing with Extended Arm 7/8" Tamping Disk
Description: A very nice heavy brass antique pipe tamper. This figural brass tamper depicts a man with one arm extended and the other behind his back. His jacket has a tail and looks as if he is either holding it up or the wind is blowing the tail up. He is also wearing a vest under the coat. He is standing on a round stand. The piece has a round tamping disk on the bottom of the stand. The tamping disk is smooth and has no markings or design to it. The piece shows interesting details of the man and his clothing. See for example the details on the front of his vest and the details on the back of his jacket. The tamping disk has a design on top at the base of the base which has lines in semicircular portions alternating with raised smooth areas. The piece is nice, solid and has heft to it, which makes it feel great in your hand. The piece, which was cast and has smoothed considerably around the head (to the point that the facial features are smoothed out) suggesting considerable use. It does show wear and a lot of character from the accumulation of residue in many of its crevasses. It also has a few scratches, and minor surface soiling indicating that it was used. Origin: Uncertain, but most likely somewhere in Europe.
Size: The tamping disk measures ~22 mm in diameter. The entire piece is ~58 mm (a bit over 2 1/4") long. The piece itself weighs about 33.5 grams or ~1.2 ounces.
Marks: Unmarked as to the maker.
Distinguishing Characteristics - Most Interesting About The Piece: This is definitely a nice brass antique figural pipe tamper that would make a great addition to your collection. A true antique that is good looking and in relatively good condition after being around for over 100 years. You can add it to your collection or you can use it with pride when smoking your pipe, it will make a great conversation piece.
Condition: It is in very good condition despite its age and utilitarian function. It has no cracks, hairlines, breaks, or repairs. The piece has a few scratches, general wear and some soiling. The piece has smoothed around the head and body suggesting considerable use. The piece still retains quite a bit of its original detail such as the clothing and some of the facial features. The tamper has several bent area along the edge which can be seen in the photos. In addition, the end of the extended arm does not show hand details, but rather may be worn out and lost most of the details over the years.
