Antique Forged Wrought Iron Butcher Flesh Fork Rat Tail Hanger Stamped RB

Description: A beautiful antique handmade two-pronged butcher meat or flesh fork. The pieces is made of forged wrought iron with a tubular solid handle flattened both at the top end and near the two prongs. The handle ends at two prongs on one end and at a rounded end, in the form of a rat tail, to hang from at the other end. The flat bottom portion of the handle goes into the two tubular prongs of the fork which have pointed ends. The fork is stamped RB (most likely the initials of the maker) on both sides of the end where the hanger is. This is a great looking high quality antique butcher tool which seldom come by and would make a great addition to any collection. Date: Uncertain, but most likely early to mid 1800s, could be earlier.

Origin: Purchased at an antiques auction in Southeastern Pennsylvania, where it was most likely was made.

Size: The fork measures ~16" long, is ~2" at its widest and its prongs are ~2 1/4" long. The piece weighs about 5 ounces.

Maker: Unknown.

Marks: Marked with the letters R B, which are stamped on both sides of the handle. These letters we believe are the initials of the maker.

Distinguishing Characteristics - Most Interesting About The Piece: A nice well made wrought iron butcher utensil that is very good looking and would be a great addition to any collection.

Condition: Fork is in very good condition with no cracks or repairs. It has scratches, some pitting, and minor signs of oxidation commensurate with its age and utilitarian function. It has a beautiful black look and a nice age patina. Please see photos for additional condition information.
