Antique Hand Painted Miniature on Porcelain Medieval Woman Easel Type Wood Frame

  • $ 97.77

Description: Antique very well-done hand painted miniature of a woman on porcelain. The miniature, which is in the medieval Italian painters’ style, shows this woman with brown hair wearing a hair net with a golden strap having pearls or diamonds hanging from it holding it in place. She has a purple head cover, a red blouse and a blue over shirt. She is wearing a golden necklace. The woman is in profile and the painting is very well executed. The painting is unsigned but the back of the porcelain has writings in pencil which appear to be 15 of/136 and 4 Liq and the impressed number 15. The miniature is inserted in a small wooden oval frame and fits well. The frame has a wooden cover that is kept in place with two metal strips which swivel to allow you take out the cover. The cover is a bit loose and does not stay in place easily when the plaque is inserted. This is why we have inserted a piece of cardboard to hold the cover and plaque securely in place. The frame has two short legs, one of which is broken and lost, and a hinged stand on the back to hold it up. The frame itself has very nice decorative pattern along the edge and surrounding the painting itself (see photos for details). The painting and the wood oval frame are in very good condition with one leg missing but no other observable damage or losses. This is a very nice piece, which would make a nice addition to you collection of miniatures. Please view photos as they are part and parcel of our description.

Date: Uncertain, but most likely early to mid 1800s (early to mid 19th century).

Origin: Recently acquired at an estate sale in Southeast Pennsylvania.

Size: The frame measures ~5 1/2" by ~4 5/8", while the artwork measures ~3 3/8" by ~2 3/4". The entire piece weighs about 5.5 ounce.

Artist: Unknown.

Marks: Unsigned with the back of the porcelain having what looks like the number 15 impressed in it and pencil; markings which appear to say "15 of 136 and 4Liq".

Distinguishing Characteristics - Most Interesting About The Piece: This is a nice hand painted miniature very well done and in great condition. It would make a worthy addition to your collection.

Condition: The painted porcelain component itself is in very good condition with no chips, breaks, or repairs. The wood oval frame is also in good condition, with one leg missing and having general soiling, a few scratches, and some minor dings. Again, the artwork is intact with no losses and the colors are all there and vivid. The cover is a bit loose and does not stay in place easily when the plaque is inserted. This is why we have inserted a piece of cardboard to hold the cover and plaque securely in place with the swinging metal holders in place. We are selling the piece as found and actually selling the porcelain plaque while the damaged frame is just coming for the ride. A nice antique piece of art work worthy of a spot in your collection of miniature paintings. Please view photos to appreciate the beauty of the piece and for additional condition information.
