Antique Hanging Cast Iron Two Compartment Match Holder Urns with Scroll & Plants
Description: This is an antique cast iron hanging match holder. The match holder has two compartments in the form of footed urns next to each other. The urns have plant leaves to the side and below with a scroll above and below the urns. The piece has a striker starting at the base of the urns and extending downwards to the end of the scroll supporting the urns. The scroll design above the urns has a round hole near the top from which it would hand. The back of the urn is marked "PATd JAN 15 1807". The piece is painted in black and we believe this is no0t the original color of the piece. We believe the piece was painted in a golden tone (see around the marking on the back) and the black paint is a recent paint. A nice old piece to add to your collection at a reasonable price. Please carefully view the photos as they are part and parcel of our description.
Date: Uncertain but most likely mid to late 1800s (Mid to late 19th century), could be earlier.
Origin: Purchased at an estate sale in Southeastern Pennsylvania.
Size: The match holder measures ~7 1/2" by ~5" and extends outwards ~1". The compartments where the matches would reside are ~2" wide, ~2" deep, and extend outwards ~1". The entire piece weighs slightly over 12 ounces.
Maker: Unknown.
Marks: Marked on the back "PATd JAN 15 1807" as shown in the last photo.
Distinguishing Characteristics - Most Interesting About The Piece: </b>Just a very nice antique match holder in very good condition, which would make a good addition to your collection.
Condition: The match holder is in very good condition with no breaks, cracks, damage, or repair. The piece has been repainted recently in black except for a small area on the back, which shows the patenting information. The piece is soiled inside the cups/urns where the matches would reside. There is a few small spots on the foot of one of the urns where the black paint has chipped off and you can see the metal under it with some signs of rust (see left urn base in the third and fourth photo). There is also signs of soiling throughout the exterior of the piece in the form of imbedded dust but nothing comparable to what you see on the inside of the urns. The piece can use a good cleaning, but we leave that to the discretion of the new owner. Please view photos for additional condition information.
