Antique Heavy German Slim Shaped Flagon with Hinged Lid and Ball Thumb Piece Marked G.M.L. 1707

Description: An antique small, slim, and rather heavy (weighs 1 pound 6 1/2 ounces for a height of ~7") pewter flagon. The flagon has a round flat base rising in a curved inwards slated sides with twoo raised rings for decoration to a flared rim at the top. The top has a spout and the flagon has a hinged lid with a ball shaped thumb piece. The flagon has an applied handle which has the hinge at the top which is attached to the lid. The flagon is marked on the front with engraving which spells G. M. L. 1707. and has the letter E in cursive with what we believe are Hebrew letters "He" and "Kaf" between them. The flagon is similar to 686 and 690 in Peter Hornsby's book "Pewter of the Western World, 1600-1850" published in Schiffer Publishing Ltd, Exton, PA in 1983 suggesting it is of German origin from the late 18th or early 19thh century. Date: Uncertain but most likely late 18th century to early 19th century.

Origin: Purchased at an estate auction in Southeastern Pennsylvania. The flagon was most likely made in Germany.

Size: Measures ~3 1/2" in diameter at the base and ~2 3/8" in diameter at the top. It is ~4 3/4" at its widest including the handle and spout while it is ~6 7/8" high to the top of the thumb piece. The piece weighs over 1 pound and 6 ounces.

Maker: Unknown.

Marks: Marked as to the maker. It has engraving on the front "G. M. L. 1707." and has the letter E in cursive with what we believe are Hebrew letters "He" and "Kaf" between them.

Distinguishing Characteristics - Most Interesting About The Piece: This is a great looking antique worthy of a spot in your collection.

Condition: This flagon is in very good condition with no breaks, cracks, or repairs. It does have a few scratches, some minor dings here and there especially on the edge of the base, and is soiled inside and out. The flagon has residual from cleaner especially on the inside but can also be seen along the seams. The piece has a nice gray age patina and is nicely toned or soiled. All of these issues can be seen in the photos. A beautiful piece of very nice form, which would look great in your collection of old pewter.
