Antique Hubley Cast Iron Large Seated Rabbit Still Penny Bank Pink Ears & Eyes

  • $ 57.77

Description: A beautiful and rather uncommon antique cast iron still penny bank. It is cast in the form of a large seated rabbit having its ears perked-up. The rabbit is sitting on its hind legs with its front legs fully stretched. The rabbit is sitting up and looking straight ahead. It has a flat base and is made of two halves held together with a screw. It has the coin slot on the back below its head. See page 89 of Andy and Susan Moore's book "The Penny Bank Book; Collecting Still Banks" Published by Schiffer Books, of Exton, PA in 1984 for a similar example, bank No. 570. The rabbit has pink ears and eyes. Please carefully review the photos presented as they are part and parcel of our description.

Date: Late 1800s (Late 19th century)-early 1900s (early 20th century).

Origin: USA.

Size: The bank measures ~4 1/2" in height and the bottom measures ~4" at its longest (including the feet) by ~1 3/4" at its widest. The bank weighs about 14 ounces.

Maker: Known to have been made by Hubley.

Marks: Marked on the inside on both halves of the bank with the stamped numbers 1 on one half and what looks like 3 on the other half. No other markings are evident.

Distinguishing Characteristics - Most Interesting About The Piece: This is a nice example of this very desirable bank. It would display very well and make a nice addition to your collection.

Condition: The bank is in good condition with no breaks, major loses, or repairs. It maintains quite a bit of its original paint with losses throughout, which can be seen in the photos. The screw is definitely not original to the piece but rather a replacement. The bank is soiled and would probably benefit from a good cleaning but we leave that to the discretion of the new buyer. Because the screw is not original to the piece, we are selling this bank "AS IS" at a fraction of its true value. A nice bank, which would display very well in your collection. Please view photos carefully for additional condition information and to appreciate the beauty of this piece.
