Antique Hubley Cast Iron Sunbonnet Sue Bookends Girl in Blue Dress Stamped 72

  • $ 117.77

Description: A pair of antique cast iron bookends. The bookends depict the image of a girl standing wearing a blue dress and a head cover having a feather in the back. This is the character known as Sunbonnet Sue. In our opinion, this set of book ends, which were made by Hubley in early to mid-1900s have been repainted sometime in their life. The dress is blue, while the bonnet is in off-white color with brown fringes. The girl is standing on a green base and she is wearing white stockings and brown shoes. The back of the book ends has also been painted in a blueish off-white coloring as is the bottom of the base. Be that as it may, this is a great pair of antique cast iron bookends that would look great on your shelf or in your collection. A great set of bookends worthy of a spot in your collection or on your shelves. Please carefully review the photos as they are part and parcel of our description.

Date: Uncertain but most likely sometime in the early to mid-20th century.

Origin: Purchased in an estate auction in Southern New Jersey.

Size: Measures ~6" high and the base is ~3 3/4" by ~2". The pair weighs almost 3 pounds and 6 ounces.

Maker: Hubley.

Marks: Both pieces are stamped on the back with the number "72".

Distinguishing Characteristics - Most Interesting About The Piece: This is a nice pair of bookends with a beautiful and colorful design. A beautiful set of bookends of substantial construction. Combined they weigh almost 3 pounds and 6 ounces. Just a beautiful set of bookends, which deserve a spot in your collection or on your shelves.

Condition: The bookends are in very good condition with no losses, breaks, repairs or dings that we could find. We believe that the bookends have been repainted sometime along the way. However, the colors are well done. It is our opinion that the repainting happened a long time ago as evidenced by the losses and chips to the colors which are observed throughout especially at the top of the base. Both pieces are soiled and would benefit from a good cleaning, but we leave that to the discretion of the new owner. Other than that, the pair in very good condition and worthy of a spot in your collection or on your shelves. Please see photos for additional condition details.
