Antique Iroquois or Mohawk Tribe Stuffed Cloth Seed Beads Decorated Heart-Tri-lobe Shaped Pincushion Beaded Tassels and Hanger
Description: This is a beautiful, handmade, antique heart or tri-lobe shaped stuffed cloth pincushion. These pincushions and other similar items were made by native American Tribes (Iroquois or possibly Mohawk) in Upstate New York or southern Canada as souvenirs to be sold to the tourists. The pincushion, which is made of cloth is decorated on the front with seed beads in what looks like leaf design and a central flower. These beads have colors such as white, blue, clear, yellow and red. In addition, the beads are used to make five decorative tassels which are attached to the sides near the bottom of the heart. There is also a tassel emanating from the central flower again made of clear and blue beads. The color of the front of the cushion is a faded red along the edge and a light and faded brown in the center. The back of the cushion, which was obviously never subject to sun tight, is a nice vivid red. The red colored material is a smooth stiff material (polished cotton) while the brown material is felt like (velvet). The cushion also has a loop on top, again made of clear beads to be used to hang. This is a truly nice old piece that is an exceptionally good condition for such an old utilitarian piece made of cloth and sewed beads. Please carefully review the photos as they are part and parcel of our description.
Date: Early 1900's.
Origin: Purchased at an estate auction in Southeastern Pennsylvania.
Size: The heart measures ~7" by 6" and is 2 1/8 thick".
Distinguishing Characteristics - Most Interesting About The Piece: Very nice old and unusual pincushion in great condition, which would make a great addition to any collection.
Condition: The pincushion is in very good condition with no repairs, or losses of beads that we could find. The cushion shows minimum wear to the cloth and no rips or breaks in the material. There are pin bricks within the felt like brown material on the front and as mentioned earlier fading of the colors in the front. these issues can be clearly seen in the photos. All in all the piece is in very good condition given it is about 100 years old and has seen use over the years. Please see photos for additional condition information.
