Antique Large Wood Box Parquetry Decorated Inlaid Geometric Pattern with Pinwheels Beautiful Brown Finish

Description: A beautiful wooden box with a hinged lid. The rectangular lid is raised in the center with canted sides sloping down to the vertical sides that meet the top of the box. Both the box and the lid have inlayed into the wooden structure pieces of light and dark colored wood forming a beautiful zigzag three dimensional geometric effect. The corners have pinwheel designs again inlaid with the two colored woods. The top of the lid has a different design along the sides with three different colored woods. The design looks more like a rod with a two colored ribbon wrapped around it,. The corners have what looks like crosses in a octagonal frame all within a square. The box is made of what appears to be a hardwood, has a nice brown finish, and has a escutcheon where a key would fit to lock it. Unfortunately, the key is long gone. A beautiful antique wood box with a hinged lid. The box has brass hinges that are fitted within a recessed side of both the lid and box. The interior of the box is with red velour, has a ledge and a small velour lined wood tray that fits on the ledge. It has what looks like silk straps that held the lid and are part of the small tray, but these are broken or torn and all that is left is short pieces attached to the tray and the sides. The bottom has green felt like material covering the entire base. A beautiful antique box that is in great shape and would make a great addition to your collection of antique wood boxes. Please carefully review the photos presented as they are part and parcel of our description.

Size: The box itself measures ~7 1/2" by ~6 1/8" by ~5 1/2" from the exterior. The tray measures ~4 3/4" by ~3 1/4" by ~7/8". The piece weighs a little over two pounds and six ounces.

Maker: Unknown.

Marks: Unmarked.

Distinguishing Characteristics - Most Interesting About The Piece: This is truly a beautiful antique wood box with beautiful parquetry design that looks great and is in great shape after being around for over 100 years.

Condition: The box is in very good condition. There are scratches, minor dings, soiling to the surface, but losses that we could find to the wood or the design. The interior velour is all there but is a bit soiled and shows some wear especially at the edges. As mentioned above the interior has silk straps that held the lid and are part of the small tray, but these are broken or torn and all that is left is short pieces attached to the tray and the sides. The piece could probably use a good cleaning and the wood could probably benefit from a good waxing to bring its full beauty out. However, at this point we decided to leave this to the discretion of the new owner. There is also a white residue at the edge of the base, which we are not sure what it is and is mentioned here for the sake of completeness since it does not distract from the beauty or quality of the piece. Other than that the piece has honest wear you would expect of a utilitarian box this old. Please see the photos for additional condition information.
